Fashion story started with a plain white shirt, and like many stories it seems mine is coming full circle. When I was younger, I used to take my dad’s plain white work shirts and revamp them with paint, sequins, the whole bit. Then my friends and I would strut our new designs at the local mall like we were all that and a bag of chips. (Because we were, obviously.)
Fast forward to now: I’ve been really intrigued by the idea of doing a t-shirt line! After completing and showcasing my last line, which was also all that and a bag of chips (some things never change), I think I’m ready for something a little simpler. Getting back to basics, so to speak. I want to offer y’all something that is affordable and comfortable without sacrificing style – the perfect comfy tee that still turns heads on the street. You know what I’m talking about.
The idea to do a t-shirt line goes hand-in-hand with my new interest in exploring sustainable fashion. Unlike “fast fashion”, sustainable fashion design focuses on social responsibility throughout the design and manufacturing process, limiting the impact on the environment and creating a truly maintainable means of production.
Sustainable fashion, or “eco fashion” as it is known to some, is something that I certainly see catching on and I hope it continues to grow in the public consciousness. Asking simple questions like “Who made my clothes?” or “What is this made out of?” are small steps toward a future that we can all enjoy together – naturally, fairly, and with a clean conscious.
Anyway. Namaste. Back to the t-shirts in question. It will certainly be a new challenge designing with sustainable materials (Like, what actually is hemp?) but I do love a challenge and I’m excited to grow and learn as a designer. I’m still in the beginning stages of sketching and researching materials, but my goal is to create a line of everyday t-shirts that can be dressed up or down without the usual fuss.
A good t-shirt embodies everything that Harry Rex is about: it’s classic, it’s simple, and you can’t help but feel great in it – no matter the occasion.
I’m really looking forward to this new chapter and sharing my progress with you along the way! Here’s to simplicity, sustainability, and your new favorite t-shirt. Wish me luck!
